Advanced Centre for Chronic and
Rare Diseases (ACCORD)

The World Health Organization defines a rare disease as a lifelong disease or condition with a prevalence of 1 or less per 1,000 living people. . In Europe a rare disease is defined when it affects no more than 5 in 10,000 people. Japan defines rare diseases which are prevalent in fewer than 50,000 cases in the entire country. The spectrum of rare diseases is so vast that there are approximately 6000 to 8000 diseases worldwide, and new rare diseases are being reported very frequently. In India, any disease having a frequency of 1 or less in 10,000 population is considered rare disease. So far more than 450 rare diseases have been recorded . In India, the magnitude of this problem is enormous and t is estimated that nearly 70 -100 million people in the country suffer from one or another form of rare disease.
